In the United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, lottery players have the opportunity to win a fortune every week by playing the lottery. Originally called Lotto, the game was first introduced by Queen Elizabeth I in 1567. She wanted to open up the world’s markets and so the lottery raised funds for building ships and developing ports. Players paid ten shillings for a ticket, which offered first prize of PS5000 in plate, tapestry or good linen cloth. Ticket holders were also offered freedom from arrest if they won the lottery.
